Dermatitis is a general term used to describe skin inflammation. Although the disorder can have many causes and occur in many forms, it usually involves swollen, reddened and itchy skin.
Atopic dermatitis (eczema) – an itchy inflammation of the skin which results in dry, red, itchy patches of skin, which worsens when scratched. Many things may trigger atopic dermatitis such allergic reactions and stress. It tends to flare periodically and then subside. The cause of atopic dermatitis, or eczema, is unknown, but it may result from a malfunction in the body’s immune system.
Contact dermatitis – an inflammation of the skin that results from direct contact with certain substances, such as soap, cosmetics, jewelry or weeds, including poison ivy or poison oak. The resulting red, itchy rash isn’t contagious or life-threatening, but it can be very uncomfortable.
Seborrheic Dermatitis – a common skin disorder that mainly affects the scalp, causing scaly, itchy, red skin and stubborn dandruff. For infants, seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp is known as cradle cap. Seborrheic dermatitis can also affect the face, upper chest,
back and other oily areas of the body.
